IT WAS AFTER MIDNIGHT. In front of the Johnson house, no one manned the KKCL booth, and the CNN truck was quiet. The neighborhood was asleep.

Gerald’s Geo Metro pulled up to the curb. Nancy climbed out, adjusted her dress and tucked a few stray hairs back into her bun. She leaned in through the window and kissed Gerald. Then, she turned and ran to the front door, giggling like the schoolgirl that she was. She unlocked the door and slipped inside the house.

The Geo pulled away.

Seconds later, the Johnson minivan pulled into the driveway. Marty and Madeleine got out.

Marty looked at the CNN truck. “CNN? When did they get here?”

Madeleine shrugged. “Beats me. They weren’t here when I left. I’ve been at the precinct for hours trying to get you out.”

Marty looked over at the Kaufman’s front yard. Zeke and his three friends were no longer camped out there. “What happened to Zeke and the others?”

“After the cops took you away,” Madeleine explained, “some liberal called in to KKCL and donated money to buy them a hotel room for a few days. So they packed up and left.”

Marty sighed.

They went inside the house.
